How to start building a successful digital career

If you are a Facebook user (which is a huge probability) you are familiar with the saying “If it's not on Facebook it didn't happen”.  It is obvious that social media has a bigger role in shaping how and what we think, and how we perceive reality and make buying decisions. Being responsible for shaping the perception of potential customers is a great responsibility and not an easy job if you want to do it right. As a Bamboo lab intern, I contributed organising the conference Digital Career Osijek (#DigitalnaKarijera) together with Netokracija at Faculty of Economics. The event was focused on students and helping us find different ways of building a successful career in the world of digital. These are top 6 learning points I got from the conference.

Implement Inline Validations in Rails from Scratch

Ah, the form is finally working. Now all that's left to do is to design it, style it and improve the user experience. Nothing too important, right? Well, maybe that would be the case in the 90s. UX is a big part of web applications development process that can significantly improve all aspects of your application. It will influence the users decision whether to come back and use your app or to decide not to use it and be irritated with the experience. Having unhappy users is bad, mkay? With Twitter, Facebook and other social networks users can spread the bad word really fast. To avoid it, let's look at how we can improve forms in our Rails web applications using inline validations and no plugins, gems, etc.

Time to Stop Hating Mornings With These 5 Proven Productivity Boosts

Are your mornings fast and chaotic? Do you often find yourself avoiding breakfast, not to even mention personal time before starting your work assignments? In the past, that thought hasn't even occurred to me, but as my obligations started accumulating I realised just how precious it is to even have a tiny amount of time.  Think about it a little, isn't that the only time you have for yourself and if utilised well, the work day can get much easier and productive. Of course, it implies having discipline and hard work to change your daily habits but trust me in a long term it is a solid investment. Which is why I’m sharing 5 steps that keep me happy - and not grumpy in the morning. They even make me more productive before I take my first cup of Earl Grey in the morning.

Dreaming big and working hard, makes Johnny a successful boy

Even in my school and college days I had dreamed of doing something creative, something cool, to travel around. Those dreams put me into places to accomplish those things through various projects. I started a Digital yearbook for my school, organized alternative concerts in my hometown of Osijek, spread the Digital yearbook concept to all high schools in Osijek and through IAESTE student organization I was part of the national delegation at the Annual conference in Bangkok, Thailand. And there, a tiger sat in my lap. Once when I was a kid, 5 or 6 years old, the circus was in town (Moira Orfei) and I got to take a picture with a tiger cub. Since then I wanted to see and take a picture with a tiger. Dreams do come true.

How I Managed to Travel (Carefree) and Stay Connected (With My Company)?

Imagine having to manage to travel across the globe for three weeks while having to handle the business and staying connected to your team at the same time. Well, I did. This year I decided to make a risky move. The goal was to travel through India (such a WiFi friendly zone) while staying connected with my co-founders and remote teams. Even though technology and apps like Skype, Whatsapp, and Viber allow a modern entrepreneur to connect with his business team while working remotely, the overall task of being away and staying truly connected isn’t easy. Does this sound familiar?

The Rails Way of Gracefully Solving Web Development Caveats

Web development can be a beautiful process. From an abstract point of view, it is no different than building a house, car or robot. It all starts from a piece of paper and a pen. You have a problem and you need to think of a solution, a solution that is going to solve the task effectively, correctly and in an acceptable timespan. Today there are a lot of design patterns that help us in setting the ground for that engineering process, but after the plannings, discussions and corrections are over you need to choose which tools and accessories you're gonna use in the implementation process.
